A reminder for family and friends
As a loved one of someone diagnosed with cancer, you will be with them through all the ups and downs of the challenging journey. From interpreting the myriad of medical information and details, supporting them through their tears, fears and anger, finding an oncologist they feel comfortable with and trust who will help you both understand the treatment options, passing on the latest health updates to other well-wishers, to managing the side effects of the treatment and helping them feel better in any way you can.
Not only will your loved one be taken on the most intense emotional rollercoaster of their lives, but you will be too, experiencing anything from anger, disbelief, denial, relief, anxiety and even guilt.
As desperate as you may be for the ‘right answers’, there are none, and this can sometimes lead to a profound feeling of powerlessness. You must remember that you are not required to provide a ‘solution’, only a kind shoulder to cry on and the ability to really listen to your loved one.
You are not alone, and you will need to ensure you have your own support crew of family and friends that you can talk to and turn to when you need some support too.
